Tuesday Musings: Or, What To Do With This Nook?

As you may (or may not) know, I've recently moved house.
Specifically, from an apartment building to a real, actual, detached house.

This is a fantastic house with wonderful family history. I love this house.
I had some great help getting this place to look more "me", and so have had house-nesting and room decorating on my mind for the past few months.

After all was said and done on the September 30th move, I somehow fit all my copious amounts of crap into this (really rather small) abode. (yes, that's right. The abode is small. This has nothing to do with the aforementioned crap of copious amounts).

Many of the little details have been tended to; I've discovered a bit of a routine, things have their places, nooks have their nooklets.

But, along with all that framed art and photo hanging that I have to do, there's also the question of this interesting kitchen feature.

Photobucket

My mother tells me this once was a nook for an ironing board (that's right - in the kitchen).
At the moment I have my calendar hanging in this space, but that sort of seems to be a wasted opportunity.

I've had spice rack suggested as a possible use for the once-ironing-board-bed, which would be very cute.
But I thought I'd poll ya'll and see: What would you do with this space?

Shelves. Or I was thinking spice rack too. Do you have any cute little kitchen knickknacks to display? Is it too shallow for cookbooks? Could you outfit it with wire baskets and put your fresh fruit in there?

well, I had a once-an-ironing-board nook in my old kitchen and I used it as a spice rack. Mine was taller (floor to ceiling), and had a door on it. My boyfriend installed little shelves for me and I used it to store spices -- it was perfect because I could see everything all at once instead of having everything all piled on top of each other and having to dig for what I wanted.

We have one of these in our house that was converted to a spice rack, for which is what we still use it.

I was also thinking spice rack.

But it could also be a nice spot for a big vase of flowers. Or some unusually tall knick-knack sort of thing(s). Or a phone & message centre/board for notes (although this idea perhaps is less useful if you're not living with other people).

Or heck, you could go totally crazy and put an ironing board there.

I would put very tiny shelves in it to house adorable eclectic knicknacks

Do you need the storage space? If you do, I'd recommend getting a door made for it. Open shelves would have to be dusted. If you don't need the space, you could hang a picture over it. That would be pretty and mostly maintenance-free.

Me? I would make a nice knitterly stained glass window effect or tapestry for it. Something to add texture and contrast to all the other walls. You could paint the interior of it a nice rich maroon to go with the yellow walls and then cover it with a piece of knitted lace. That's what I would do, anyway, and make it into an unexpected conversation piece.

Spice rack or may be hang up your kitchen utensils on a couple of racks or some cleverly designed hooks? My mother in law has a clever device - a magnetic knife holder. Something like that might work too.

I would put some kind of art work into it.. and if I was feeling really creative, then a collage of personal photos, not ordered, but mish-mashed. :)

Loving the new space.. :)
